The kids are out of school, and nearshore waters provide an opportunity for fishing fun from the Carolinas all the way around to the Texas Gulf Coast. Tidewater’s 2100 Bay Max is a perfect platform for families to get out and become a part of the coastal fishing fun.

Spanish mackerel, bluefish, jack crevalle, ladyfish, and a host of other species provide plenty of rod-bending action for even the youngest anglers. Match the tackle to the task, and you’ll have hours of fun and enjoyment getting the whole family hooked on fishing.

Trolling Tactics

All of these species share one thing in common: they love chasing schools of baitfish in the surfline from April until November. Whether it’s glass minnows, finger mullet, peanut bunker (menhaden), or threadfin herring, if you find the bait, you’ll find the fish.

One of the best ways to take advantage of them is by trolling at low rpms with small swimming plugs or shiny jigs.

The first thing you’ll need are a couple of light- to medium-action spinning rods armed with 8- to 12-pound braided line. Reels should have a smooth drag and be capable of holding 200 to 250 yards of braided line or monofilament. To the terminal end, attach a 12-foot leader of 25-pound flourocarbon. For most applications this is all you’ll need, but be prepared to lose some lures to toothy species like bluefish or Spanish mackerel. If you encounter more than your fair share, go to a small shot of light single-strand wire.

Lure Choices

Any small artificial mimicking the prevalent baitfish in your area will work. Good choices to imitate glass minnows include leadheads like the Don’s Potgut or Bridgeport Diamond Jig. Mullet, herring, and other species are better represented by hardbodied lures like the Yozuri Crystal Minnow or Rapala CD-11, or soft lures like Storm’s WildEye Rippin’ Minnow Swim Shad.

When you find schools of bait with predators lurking, set out a lure in each stern corner of your boat. Run one short at about 50 feet, the other long at about 100 feet, just like when trolling for pelagics offshore. Position your boat so that you can troll along the edges of the baitfish schools. Adjust your speed so that your baits swim in the wake, not skipping or jumping out of the water.

Small Boat Alternative

At 21 feet, 6 inches, the Tidewater 2100 Bay Max is the perfect family fun fishing choice. Its 96-inch beam offers a stable, beefy platform for anglers young and old alike. Weighing just 2,050 pounds with a draft of 10 inches, the 2100 Bay Max is the perfect crossover boat, allowing access to shallow flats and deeper bay and nearshore waters. With 56 gallons of standard fuel capacity and recommended 150-hp four stroke power, owners enjoy a range that’s unparrallelled in similar bay boats,  “150 horsepower is very popular but many choose the economy of the 115 and still get great performance.

Other standard features on the 2100 Baymax (and the rest of Tidewater’s lineup) include all-composite, no-wood construction with fiberglass stringers and a hand-laid fiberglass hull. Each boat is rigged to AYBC standards and is backed by a 10-year transferable hull warranty.
